This chapel belongs to a denomination known as ‘The Calvinistic Methodist Church of Wales’ (This denomination is also known as The Presbyterian Church of Wales). A chapel was built on the present site for the first time in 1774, and was named after the field on which it was built – ‘Llain Bwlch y Gwynt. (llain means ‘a small piece of narrow land’). The building was enlarged in 1809, but in 1833 a second chapel was built on the site. A gallery was added as part of the alterations that were made to the chapel in 1865.
The chapel’s first minister was the Rev. Ebenezer Richard. He was ordained to the ministry in the first Methodist ordination at the Llandeilo Association in the year 1811. The historian, the Rev. Gomer Roberts, says of him, ‘He was a very powerful preacher, but is remembered chiefly as one of the principal organizers of his denomination in the beginning of the 19th century.’ The Rev. Henry Richard, ‘The Apostle of Peace’, was his son.
You are warmly welcomed to services at Bwlchgwynt which are held through the medium of Welsh. Information regarding Sunday services and other events can be found on the chapel’s Facebook page (See below the link to that page).
